Scum’s Wish Anime Blu-ray review

Studio: Lerche
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Distributor: Section23 Films
Release Date: September 25, 2018

Looking for an anime that shows just how scummy humanity can be? How about loads of unrequited love? Do you like well-told drama? Well, Scum’s Wish is for you. Seriously, it pulls no punches right from the first episode and really lives up to the name of “scum’s wish” extremely well. Many thanks to Section23 for the review unit!

Hanabi Yasuraoka is in love with her neighbor who is also now her homeroom teacher. Mugi Awaya is in love with his former tutor who is now his high school music teacher. They both go to the same school. Let the unrequited love begin! Don’t forget to add an eccentric girl in love with Mugi nor an aggressive girl in love with Hanabi. In this show, almost everyone is in love with someone else and most of them are as scummy of a human being as they can get. Find out what happens by watching the show~

I truly enjoyed Scum’s Wish. Just before I had a chance to watch My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, I had a chance to watch this show and I’m glad I watched it before. If you’re looking for a show to rival any other drama shows, this is the one as it can feel a little depressing at times. Though, the funny moments made it for me. Like the karaoke with a certain anime’s opening theme. The animation is extremely well done and the direction and storyboarding match the show’s feeling perfectly. The music and sound effects grasp you and draw you into the storytelling.

As I watched, I grew more and more engrossed in the story and wanted to see the next episode. With such an engaging story, I didn’t mind that nearly every character shown has a trash personality in some shape or form. The only character I liked at the end was Hanabi, and even she had some really killer trash moments. Almost everyone has something they desire and almost everyone is scummy. I love how every bit of the anime’s characters are true to the show’s name, but the anime itself is akin to a memorable treasure rather than trash.

For the retail price of $69.98 USD on the Sentai Filmworks store, I severely recommend you to get Scum’s Wish. I’m watching it again while writing this review (because the English dub is easy to listen to while writing) and I really am loving how everything in the show develops. Similar to a mosquito bite, the more I watched, the more I itched for more. Watch it as soon as you can. (In addition, if you’re already an Amazon Prime member at the time of this article’s writing, you can watch it via Amazon [w/o dub] to get a general idea if you’d like the show.)

Lolinia gives Scum’s Wish a Drastik Moé Measure of 8.0 out of 10.0 (80).
